Extra effort is given by the Little
Man in his attempt to fly The Magic
Bus. Much is going on here in a
rather complex piece composed of
well over 150 individual parts. The
Little Man's arms and body tug and
push, while his less than helpful
little Stamper Man jumps up and
down, 4 wheels and axles move,
prop turns, 2 shafts rotate, flag
oscillates, tailpipe moves, "MB/100"
plaque rotates, counterweight
swings, the "windshield wiper"
sweeps....even a rabbit comes out of
a hat in The Magic Bus! In addition
to its inner workings, the entire bus
rocks back and forth in its airborne
quest.
Size: Approx. 18" long x 7.5" wide x
11" high (w/o flag).

Orb-The Good Egg
The Little Man cranks life
into an egg that is dreaming
of his hatching into flight.
Movements: Little Man
(arms, body, etc.), Orb's
opposing arms, eyes, bird/egg
"thoughts", propeller, related
shafts, levers, etc.
Size: Approx. 13" wide x 16"
high.

Our Little Man heads to the depths of
his universe as he pumps life into the
Mello Submarine.
Levers, links, cams and paddles
raise, lower, and turn the periscope
as the side wings pitch, the propeller
turns, and the "dive alarm" chimes in
two different tones. The "flames" in
the engine room provide amusement
for Little Man's helper where he
tempts fate by dancing above the
"fire".
Size: Approx. 19" long x 9" wide x
20" high.

Turtle

BigBug
This bug is big, but the Little Man
says it will fly! No help given,
however, by his "helper" who finds
it much more fun to do flips over
the bar in the back rather than help
in the effort. Wings flap in unison,
propeller turns, paddle flippers
move, eyes rock, beak opens and
closes, and of course our two Little
Men work (or play) at getting
BigBug off the ground.
Great rhythmic sounds.
Size: Approx. 28" long x 12" wide x
17" high with 24" wingspan.

Little Man Goes to the Fair
|
Little Man escapes to have
some fun doing somersaults
over the bar. A cylindrical
pendulum also rotates and then
oscillates at the end of the bar.
Movement is much slower on
this sculpture, dictating that it
remain actuated for longer
periods (a few minutes to 1/2
hour or more if desired). Man
and pendulum flip about every
50 seconds, but not at the same
time. Animation is such that
there is always something
happening, although very slowly
and relatively quietly. Thumb
switch on cord controls motion.
This is a much less complicated
and smaller piece and makes an
amusing desk-top conversation
piece.
Size: Approx. 6.5" long x 4.5"
wide x 4.5" high.

Ever fly a Turtle? Little Man thinks he
can!
Inner linkages (propelled by
you-know-who's arms and body
movements) drives the sea turtle's 4
flippers and tail in a rather natural
rhythm. The Turtle's head bobs up
and down, and the propeller rotates,
while today's "meal" swims inside.
Size: Approx. 27" long x 21" wide x 9"
high including fins. Body alone is 14"
wide.

"WingMan" A New Manually Activated (non-motorized) Kinetic Metal Sculpture by John M. Schwab
|
This Little Man has been
observing various Critters and
Contrivances in their quest for
flight, and has decided to simplify
matters. By strapping on his
"Flight Suit" and employing a little
flapping motion, WingMan shows
that there is nothing to this flying
thing! Wingman hangs from
springs which are suspended from
overhead (from a ceiling etc.).
Fine mono filament connects the
springs to WingMan's wings.
Pulling lightly on the carefully
balanced "belly weight" sets the
sculpture in motion as he floats
up and down while his wings
"flap" in a realistic pattern (no
motor in this sculpture).
SIZE of SCULPTURE:
Measuring approx. 13.5" long X
4.75" high.
Wingspan is about 13".
Sculpture when hanging
motionless is about 33"from the
top of the springs to bottom of the
belly weight.

"Airplane" This sculpture was created some time ago but not featured previously on this site.
|
Little Man continuously cranks
life into his airplane in an
effort to keep it aloft. The
Little Man cranks the shaft
which spins the propeller and
creates an unconventional
flapping like motion of the
wings and tail.
The sculpture pictured here
was ceiling mounted with
power provided from a nearby
wall mounted light switch.
SIZE OF SCULPTURE:
Approx. 20" Long X 6" Wide
with 16" Wingspan.
NOTE: Although photographed outdoors, none of these Kinetic Metal Sculptures are designed or built to be installed as outdoor sculptures.
